Recycle paper into a beautiful journal which can be used for any purpose e.g. a book of family recipes to be handed down, an art journal, a travel journal, a journal containing memorable bits and pieces for 2024 and beyond. We will look at various ways to cover the journal by recycling fabric and if time allows, using old brown paper bags.

The challenge is not to buy anything new.

For the purposes of this class we will be covering the journal with fabric. We will be making the pages from paper, adding pockets, embellishing and personalising.

NEEDS LIST

To make book – covers = 15 cm wide x 22cm long with a 5cm wide spine

  • Cereal packet cardboard or similar weight – from which to cut front and back covers and spine
  • Felt (any colour) or piece of batting – to back inside and outside of book. An old piece of knitting works equally well
  • Piece of fabric with which to cover book – try and recycle what you have–  to save time, it needs to be one entire piece.  A 50cm square is ideal
  • Fabric scissors
  • Needle
  • Sewing thread
  • Pencil
  • Double sided tape
  • Cutting board, ruler and cutter (optional) – for measuring and cutting pieces of your book. If you do not have these a ruler and scissors work equally well

To make pages in book

  • Paper – Old magazines, glossy or otherwise, books, maps, paper serviettes, plain paper, scrapbooking paper, whatever is at hand
  • Glue stick
  • PVA glue
  • Stamps and stamp pad (optional)
  • Scissors for paper

Any other embellishments – old buttons, trim

When collecting your bits and pieces of paper for this book, or if you are making a book for someone else, ask these questions:

What is your favourite colour?

What is your favourite food?

What is your favourite animal/bird/pet?

What are your hobbies/interests?

You can then find images or text which will personalise your book
