The full development of the pigment from woad is sunlight dependant so if you sign up for this class and the day turns out to be very grey and rainy please be prepared for a change in the workshop date.

This workshop is part of the Natural Material Series of workshops that we offer seasonally at ‘from out of the blue studio gallery’.

In this class we will harvest the new season woad plants and use them on three different types of natural fibres. You will take home two samples – wool and cotton, and you will create a dyed silk scarf. This will introduce you to the different needs each type of material has for successful woad dying.

We will use the studio gallery garden to source our plants and learn how to work with woad in an empathetic way with the cycles of nature. We will use the cold extraction process.

We will chat about the philosophy of developing textile techniques that have a very low or no environmental impact.

This class will be definitely capped at 3 participants due to the available workspaces.

Practical things

All tools and materials supplied.

Morning tea will be provided. Anything you particularly fancy to nibble on while in the creative flow that you are happy to share would be gratefully enjoyed.

This is a bit of a messy process so please wear work type clothes, especially something ‘stout’ on your feet as we will walk around the garden and that space is shared with many free range poultry……….

Our weather can be fickle on this site so layers are good, also sun hats and warm hats are often very helpful…….sometimes even both in the same morning.

Philosophy

This is a very most favourite time of year to be in the garden and this will be a workshop that celebrates delight in how Nature can nurture our creative practices. It is a freestyle activity that is NOT bound by scientific procedures and hard and fast rules. We enter the dye kitchen and garden with minds open for exploring and open to having wonder revealed to us. This is supported by my own teaching style which is as a facilitator rather than as a figure of ‘authority’. I lead these explorations prepared to share as much of my knowledge as I can and to receive as much new knowledge as I can from my fellow explorers. We learn as partners.

You can pay as you arrive at the gallery space on the workshop day. We have Eftpos and take cash.
