Artist Statement  by Anne Daniel

My artistic practice is a collaboration with nature. I have an innate desire to create with my hands using materials that come from the earth.

The materials are gathered from my garden, the bush, and the beach—using what grows, what falls, and what the landscape offers. Some materials are used raw; others are processed by hand using basketry and fibre techniques passed down through generations.

Working intuitively, I respond to the texture, forms, and structural possibilities of each material. My process is tactile, thoughtful, and often experimental. Each work becomes a record of connection between maker and material.

Connection is central to my practice. The materials link me to the land and seasons. The techniques connect me to ancestral knowledge. The finished works invite connection with viewers, creating a shared experience. The elements within each work are physically entwined.

There is much satisfaction in growing, harvesting, and processing my own materials. I like to use as much as possible of what I gather.  At the end of their life, my works can be returned to the earth, completing a cycle of renewal and sustainability.

The Shape of Gathering explores how materials, forms and gestures come together—sometimes loosely, sometimes tightly—to hold space.

Each work begins with the gathering of plant matter from in and around my garden – harakeke, leaf, vine, branch.  The natural elements are transformed into sculptural works using a variety of techniques. The works hold memory, presence and intention. They celebrate natural colour, imperfection, and the quiet marks left by time and weather.

The works are gatherings in themselves: of textures, of time, of place. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the act of gathering—materials, gestures, and ideas—and to consider their own ways of connecting with the natural world.

I hope they evoke an emotional response—an invitation to pause, to touch, to wonder.
