We are very excited that we are going to host this international touring exhibition . It is a rare thing to have a tapestry collection in the gallery so we hope everyone takes advantage of the opportunity to see the weavings.
Tapestry Touring International is a not-for-profit group. Our core aims are to provide opportunities for tapestry weavers from different countries to:
- work together on a theme, creating small format hand woven tapestries;
- exhibit together in an international touring exhibition; whilst
- keeping artist fees to a minimum.
VERVE is the fourth in a series of international touring exhibitions of small format hand woven tapestries, bringing together weavers from England and New Zealand.
Tapestry weaving has a long and distinguished history but is often confused with embroidery on cloth, such as the Bayeux Tapestry. Hand woven tapestry is a plain weave fabric requiring a loom or frame with a vertical warp, which is completely covered by the weft during the weaving process.
VERVE aims to enlighten, inspire and educate the onlooker in relation to the variety and range of approaches to both hand woven tapestry, and a theme. Individual artist weavers have been invited to exhibit, and come from a diverse range of creative backgrounds and stages in their careers, from novice weavers to those with international reputations.
This final Tapestry Touring International exhibition, VERVE, is dedicated to Lindsey Marshall who passed away suddenly on 2 December 2025. Lindsey worked tirelessly with her dear friend Jane Freear-Wyld over the past 10 years of Tapestry Touring International to provide opportunities for tapestry weavers from England and different countries to exhibit together. Both Jane and Lindsey have worked for us all to bring attention to the art of tapestry all around the world, and we say thank you.
