Outline:
This workshop is designed for tapestry weavers who know the basics of tapestry and are ready to explore how to interpret a design into weave, using techniques that they may have not used before.
We will explore the interpretation of the drawn mark into the woven mark, including:
- Colour and shading using bundling, hatching, textural effects, etc.
- Vertical lines – fine, wrapping, blanket stitching, pick & pick, slits.
- Effect of transparency, or mist effect laid over another design, looking through water.
- Movement in weave.
If students would like to learn how to make leashes for ease of weaving, and looms are not fitted with means to attach a rod at the top front, they can bring a dowling rod (about 2cm diameter) and a couple of small G clamps which can be attached to the top of the looms. Also bring warp for tying.
They can bring any tapestries that which they may like to talk about, or any problems that they have had in the weaving process. We may be able to find some tricks to help solve any issues.
What to bring:
- Tapestry loom already warped up at 8 e.p.i, 6 inches in width.
- Fine coloured yarn (preferably 110/2 TEX or 2/16s).
- Bobbins.
- Warp yarn.
- Scissors, thread, darning needles, tape measure, masking tape.
- Any design (cartoon) which you would like advice on how to weave.
- Masking tape
- Sharpie or Vivid permanent ink marker
The Tutor will supply:
- Samples and a few small tapestries to view and discuss
- Bobbins that can be used for the workshop
- A full set of notes
- Fine coloured weft threads

Trish Armour has been weaving tapestries for over thirty years and has exhibited in New Zealand and Internationally. Her work usually focuses on the face and human form but also includes texture and the natural world. Trish uses collage and Photoshop as design tools and often merges two photos into one to achieve an ethereal effect. For more information about Trish please check out her website: https://www.tapestryartist.co.nz/
We have enjoyed a selection of Trish’s tapestries previously in one of our earliest exhibitions ‘Woven – Tapestries and Treasures.’ (July 2020). It is wonderful to be having Trish on site to share her knowledge with us through this workshop.
