Woollen Felt Artist.
Kath O’Halloran first filled the gallery with her intricately nuno-felted wearable art works in May and June of 2021 as part of a duo exhibition with Julie Lumsden – Altered Perception Is Reality What We See Or What We Feel? Kath created three wearable felt works for this exhibition.
Here are her artist comments from that time:
In 2007 I watched a felting demonstration and knew this was something I
needed to learn more about as I was amazed how the raw wool was turned into fabric. I love the creativity that felting provides…colour, texture. If you are incorporating silks, cotton, synthetics, you are only limited by your imagination.
Kath creates her art using NZ wool, an amazing fibre and no two pieces are the same.
As a member of the Creative Fibre community Kath has found a platform to mix with and be inspired by like minded people. She is also a member of the Napier Weavers and Spinners which is a very good support club. This club has provided Kath with a regular outlet for her art through an annual sale of work along with an exhibition every second year.
Like so many textile makings Kath’s works need to be seen up close and personal, with some touching. Who can resist touching beautiful fabric? Kath is a master of rich textures through the use of differing fibres and nuno felting combined with regular wet felting methods.
Kath lives with her partner of many years 2 cats and two rescue dogs who give her a great deal of pleasure.

For the Touch Exhibition 2024, Kath has created more of her impressive felted works. These include beautiful wearable items as well functional items for the household. Being nuno felted they are all delightfully tactile, rich interlaced surfaces where the fibres have been felted together and the colour plays are diverse and complex.
