Fibre Artist focusing on felted art forms

Julie has held a solo exhibition at from out of the blue studio gallery called Altered Perception back in 2021. So it is with great pleasure that we will be hosting more of Julie’s felted and woven works for Touch. Here is the link for Altered Perception https://fromoutofthebluestudiogallery.com/1813-2/

Julie has given us an updated artist statement on her works for touch:

I am passionate about wool, how it can be manipulated to create various textures and forms when felted by hand or by needle.
For the last few years I have been experimenting with a needle felting machine and find the paint effects that can be created interesting and inspiring, with the finished result different to hand felting as the process allows more control on colour and texture. I also enjoy the texture that can be created when hand felting fabric, which depends on sheep breed and fabric type.

Having the skills and knowledge to hand felt in the traditional manner and being able to apply those skills to a different, modern and innovative machine method is quite exciting and has many possibilities.

My work for the Touch exhibition has been created by hand and needle felting fabric. The idea that the pieces are touched is pleasing as the look and texture of the felted fabric draws the hand in, to feel what the eyes see.

For Touch Julie has created some very practical felted works as well as some sculptural works. These two expressions allow us to enjoy her subtle uses of colour and texture. They are all a truely tactile experience.

We are also able to enjoy some of Julie’s explorations into ecodying her felted works. Lovely shades from avocado are included in this body of works.
