Weaving Comes to Town

Tutor – Christine Keller

THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL.

2nd September to 6th September 2021.

9am – 4 pm Daily

Price for Taranaki Residents $250.00 plus Materials.

Christine will guide a 5 day intense weaving workshop to create a custom dyed merino shawl. The workshop will train people in colour confidence, and specialist dyeing techniques with acid wool dyes, then we will talk about different methods of setting up a loom and carry one project through to finishing level. As a result students will have a complete individual shawl and lots of extra skills.

The materials and dyes will be supplied by the tutor as will the looms to create the projects on.

There is a material fee of $30.00 per person.

The program will be provided by Christine Keller, an internationally recognised textile artist, master weaver and educator who has been running community classes like this one very successfully for the last seven years. Born in Germany Christine positions her work between textile design, contemporary art, new media research and innovation. She is interested in the clash of tradition and new technologies, and its social and political implications. As a result of her involvement with the international textiles community Christine has been living away from her home country for over thirteen years.Christine’s work has been exhibited internationally since 1994 (America, Australia, China, Europe, Japan, Mongolia, New Zealand) and has featured for example in the publications, Techno Textiles 1 and 2 (1998, 2005) by Marie O’Mahony and Warp and Weft (2012) by Jessica Hemmings. Christine is an award winning designer, especially for my woven and felted design work for ‘Handweberei Rosenwinkel’ (1998-2001) in Germany.

In July 2005 Christine arrived at the Dunedin School of Art at Otago Polytechnic as Academic Leader of the Textile Section in Dunedin. In late 2012 she founded the Dunedin-based Weaving Studio Weaving on Hillingdon and in 2015 added the community space Dunedin’s LoomRoom which has moved to new, custom built premises in April 2018. As an immigrant to New Zealand Christine took New Zealand Citizenship in 2016.
