Birgit Moffatt.

Birgit has embraced all aspects of Aotearoa since choosing to make this special place her home. Deeply engaged with her surrounding natural environment Birgit’s art practice encompasses many natural materials and found items.

A degree in Visual Arts and Design and in depth Maori Arts studies over recent years have influenced Birgit’s approach to her materials and the works she creates.

An actively exhibiting artist Birgit has contributed a wonderful work for this current exhibition.

Here is Birgit’s background statement about her work in Dreaming of the Future – SDA Exhibition:

Dialogue with Tāne-Mahuta

Dialogue with Tāne-Mahuta is part of a larger Body of Work, an investigation of a sense of place with my adopted turangawaewae; it expresses my journey of spiritual (re-) connection with Te Taiao, the natural world.
The dialogue continues in my studio, while working intuitively, transforming the bark with subtle stitches into a piece of art, without diminishing the mauri of the bark.

I ran a looping workshop one weekend and couldn’t help myself to loop my own little taonga afterwards. Every time I teach I also learn, its very rewarding and not a one way road. – Birgit Moffatt.
